PETITION OF PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR PRAIRIE DOGS

IN SANTA FE CITY/COUNTY

PETITION SPONSORED BY:

The PDAWG Task Force,

People for Native Ecosystems (PNE) and

The Prairie Dog Alliance of Santa Fe

The Gunnison’s prairie dog is a significant part of the original landscape of Santa Fe, and a beloved wildlife icon for many residents and visitors. As a native keystone species, prairie dogs are vital to the survival of our local ecology and natural heritage. They are highly intelligent with a sophisticated social network and identifiable language. Prairie dogs are rapidly disappearing from Santa Fe– primarily a result of relocation to accommodate construction and other human land use needs.

WE, the UNDERSIGNED, respectfully petition the City and County of Santa Fe to heed the spirit of the City Ordinance to preserve Gunnison’s prairie dogs so they remain a vibrant component of the natural character of Santa Fe; to strictly enforce the Ordinance and exhaust all other humane alternatives before removing prairie dogs; to reaffirm the community’s commitment to our beloved mascot; to recognize that the welfare and survival of Gunnison’s prairie dogs are a significant public concern; and to honor the mission of St. Francis of Assisi to compassionately protect all creatures.

RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED TO THE CITY COUNCIL OF SANTA FE

AND TO THE SANTA FE COUNTY COMMISSION

“If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man. All things are connected.” ~ Chief Seattle

Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission: to be of service to them whenever they require it.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi
